Spotted Thick-knee
The thick-knees are large terrestrial “shorebirds” that can often be found far from water. Big-eyed and cryptically patterned, they are primarily nocturnal. Their “knees” are indeed a little thicker than the rest of the leg, but only slightly more so than those of other birds in their order.
The family is Burhinidae. There are 10 species placed in 2 genera.
